Soy Wax Candles: A Guide to Proper Candle Care
Share
Soy candles are not only delightful to the senses but also eco-friendly. Made from soybean oil, they burn cleaner and longer than traditional paraffin candles. To ensure you get the most out of your soy wax candles, follow these essential candle care tips:
1. Proper Storage
When not in use, store your soy candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Sunlight can cause the candle to discolor, while excessive heat can cause the wax to melt or expand, covering up too much of the wick for it to burn properly. A closed cabinet or drawer is a perfect spot!
2. Trim the Wick
Before each lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6mm). A properly trimmed wick ensures optimal burning. If the wick is too long, the flame may become too large, leading to uneven burning and excessive smoke. Trimming the wick helps maintain a steady, clean burn.
3. First Burn Matters
When lighting your soy candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the container. This prevents tunneling, where the wax burns down the center, leaving a rim of unused wax. A full melt pool ensures an even burn throughout the candle’s life.
4. Extinguish with Care
To extinguish your candle, avoid blowing it out. Instead, dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it. This method prevents smoke and preserves the wick for the next lighting. Remember to always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
5. Burn Time and Safety
- Never leave your candle unattended.
- Limit burning time to 4 hours at a stretch.
- Maintain a 10cm (4-inch) distance between burning candles.
- Leave at least 5mm of wax in the jar to prevent overheating.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials.
By following these simple steps, you’ll enjoy the soothing glow and captivating scents of your soy wax candles while ensuring their longevity. Happy candle care! 🕯️
